Movie Review: Resident Evil 5-Retribution(2012)

Resident Evil: Retribution  The primary conflict in this very intense action/horror/fantasy movie is woman versus monster as Milla Jovovich again reprises her role as Alice, a genetically engineered paramilitary combat operative.   A genetic replicant (clone) of her original self, Alice experiences violent and horrific dreams while lying in an induced coma within a research facility located deep beneath the surface within the Kamchatka peninsula of the Russian Far East.   This research facility is operated by Umbrella Corporation, an extremely vast and powerful criminal organization which specializes in biological warfare agents and delivery systems.   The story takes place in the distant future, after human civilization has been virtually destroyed through the spread of the T-virus, a fictitious pathogen which causes massive physical and mental deterioration within humans and animals.   The T-virus is extremely contagious and spreads rapidly, inducing a horrifying zombie-like state among untold millions of individuals throughout the world.   Alice, once a soldier for the Umbrella Corporation, awakens and suits up for another confrontation with her former employer.   Chairman Wesgar, once CEO of Umbrella Corporation, has recently defected from this organization and sends a strike team of elite operatives to rescue Alice.   What follows is a series of very confusing and unexpected events, violent confrontations with zombified humans, armed hostiles, and genetically engineered monsters, as Alice displays incredible martial arts and military combat skills against her enemies.   Milla Jovovich is very ideal for this role as she is believed to hold a third degree black belt in taekwondo and also has considerable training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.   Michelle Rodriguez, who doesn’t appear to have aged in the past ten years, returns as two genetic replicants of her original character, one friendly and the other hostile.   The hostile version confronts Alice with an M-16A2 automatic rifle fitted with an M-203 grenade launcher in one scene, and proves to be an unstoppable martial arts fighter in another.   Sienna Guillory also returns as the bodysuit-wearing combat officer who leads an airborne assault on an oil tanker.   What Resident Evil 5 lacks in terms of a consistent story line, it makes up for in action and excitement.   “My name is Alice” could very well be Milla Jovovich’s equivalent to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “I’ll be back”.   There may very well be another sequel (Resident Evil 6), while Milla may also star in a female version of the Expendables sometime in the near future. A must see for all you action junkies like me.  (Article by Freelance Writer B.E. Shibley)
