Movie Review – David and Bathsheba (1951)

By Manofyesterday

Gregory Peck and Susan Hayward star as the titular characters in this version of the Biblical story of how King David fell in love with Bathsheba.

Oh man was this film boring. The only good thing that elevates this film from being an utter waste of time is Gregory Peck’s presence. He performs the role with the appropriate gravitas and inner turmoil. Aside from that it’s just dull. The romance between the characters never feels authentic and the movie feels like it’s going through the motions. It just feels like a product. Everything is mundane and monotonous, there’s no passion or vitality here. It’s quite colourful I suppose, but that’s about it. It’s like nobody actually believed in the material and there’s no sense of the human struggle. Events happen one after the other and then the film is over. I should have turned this off rather than watch the whole thing because unless you’re a die-hard Gregory Peck fan this film holds nothing for you.

When Biblical epics are done right they can be amazing, but when they’re wrong…oh man. There’s no essence of tragedy so the whole thing isn’t engaging at all. This is one of those films that just feels like it was made for the sake of being made and I can’t recommend it at all.
