Most 2014 Moto X users are shocked and disappointed with Motorola as it announced it won't be updating the Moto X to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Android flagship devices usually end up receiving the next 2 Android version updates from the date of launch. Technically that means Marshmallow (Android 6.0) update was expected on the 2014 Moto X without a doubt.
Motorola won't be providing the Android 6.0 update but would officially allow users to unlock their bootloader which will let users install custom ROMs on their devices. If you aren't aware of what custom ROMs are but just want to update your 2014 Moto X, you better start reading about CyanogenMod. CM is probably the most stable, heavily funded and most easy-to-install custom ROM of all the zillions of modified versions of Android OS.
The news of officially unlocking the Moto X came via the Motorola Forums, a Motorola Forum Manager announced that the company will soon start allowing and guiding users to unlock their Moto X bootloader, this of course comes with the warning that it would void your warranty.
Hey, everyone. Just wanted to let you know that we did get the green light to unlock the bootloader on Verizon 2014 Moto X (2nd Gen) devices. Unfortunately, we can't do this for devices on other carriers. Also, the usual caveats apply - if you unlock your device, you void the warranty. But we know some of you want the flexibility and we're glad we can offer it.
For every Moto X user who feels cheated and want the latest and the greatest of Android should simply go ahead and install custom ROMs. A 2014 device surely won't be covered under warranty, so there seems no harm in doing so. Just make sure you do it by following the guide (which you prefer to use) properly and thoroughly. You do not want to brick your device.
The unlocking process being easy is a bit long and might be daunting so make sure you have enough time and patience when you plan to do it. Read and follow the official guide to a T and do not skip or skim any of it.
