First Lady Michelle Obama took a thinly veiled swipe at China’s media censorship on Saturday.
Speaking to students at the Stanford Center at Peking University, the First Lady extolled the virtues of free speech.
“It is so important for information and ideas to flow freely over the Internet and through the media,” Obama said.
“Because that’s how we discover the truth, that’s how we learn what’s really happening in our communities, in our country and our world.”
Obama, on her second day of a weeklong goodwill tour of the country, said technology can “open up the entire world and expose us to ideas and innovations we could never have imagined.”
The Chinese government censors new and old media. Google, Facebook and Twitter are all blocked in China.
