Monday Muse: Lena Horne

An actress, a singer, a dancer, an activist and this week's Monday muse. Lena Horne was one of the greats. With a career that spanned over 70 years she was definitely worthy of admiration.

Horne's career began at the infamous Cotton Club in Harlem as a member of the chorus line. She began appearing in film in the late 1930's. Though she was a well-known actress, much of her career was spent in supporting roles due to her race.

This would ultimately be one of the reasons she stepped away from film to focus on her nightclub career in the 1950's. Horne was a long-term participant in the Civil Rights movement and even took part in the March on Washington with Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1963.

Lena Horne should be remembered and appreciated for her immense talent, activism, and of course classic beauty.
