Monday is a hangover here in Belfast, the St. Patrick’s day weekend is over and the party has gone. In fact, a lot of workplaces preemptively declared the day a holiday. However, the 18th March is more than the day after – the wonderful thing about history is that there’s always an anniversary, centenary, and something to celebrate about.
So what to celebrate? Well, we could celebrate the nobles, as today is the day King Farouk I of Egypt died and Princess Louise (daughter of Queen Victoria) was born among others. However, a certain quote comes to mind from Ludwig Van Beethoven in this instance:
Prince, what you are you are by accident of birth; what I am, I am through my own efforts. There have been thousands of princes and will be thousands more; there is only one Beethoven!
