Mom Is Always Right

By Brookedujour @brookedujour
When I was a little girl, my uncle told me a fairytale about a princess who never received any presents because she didn’t write thank you notes. At the time, I was desperately hoping to add another American Girl to my doll collection so I started religiously sending little tokens of thanks. As I got older, my mom instilled in me the importance of etiquette. With the convenience of the digital age, it’s easy to send a text or an email. But trust me, people will appreciate the extra effort a handwritten note requires. Plus, getting mail is fun! I actually skip up the stairs when I receive a letter. (I know, I’m such a dork).

For a gift

I frantically unwrap presents like a five year old, so it can be difficult and messy to remember who sent what. Always keep a list! We’re all busy but try to send the thank you note as soon as possible. Thank you notes tend to expire after a week. Get specific and let the person know what you’re planning to use the gift for.

For a job interview

One of my journalism teachers told me he was once interviewing a bunch of eager college grads for a newspaper position. He gave the job to the one girl who mailed a handwritten note thanking him for his time. Be that girl.

For a hostess

I love throwing a fabulous fete as much as the next control freak, but they take a lot of work! Thoughtful guests write thank you notes letting the hostess know their favorite part of her lovely party! They also compliment the hostess on her hospitality, beautiful table setting and delicious cooking.
Thank you cards are ESPECIALLY important if you stayed in someone’s home for a trip or an extended period of time. Put down your magazine and write your thank you note as you wait for your plane to board!
