The Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna (The Modern Art Museum of Bologna) otherwise known as MAMbo, holds a very special place in my heart.
In opened the exact month I moved to Bologna and subsequently moved in with my now husband into our first apartment. If you want to read the story of how I ended up in Italy, I’ve written it here.
Housed in an old bread factory, MAMbo is part of an urban renewal project that converted the old tabacco and food factories into a cultural hub for film, art, study, research and a nightclub!
For as long as I can remember MAMbo has been housing great aperitivi and brunches in their bar/caffe/restaurant areas, inviting people into a part of the city that was otherwise completely deprived of cool places to hangout.
We convinced our Modena friends to come with us, even though for Modenese (people from Modena), going to Bologna for the day is like saying you are just popping over to the moon!
We had a nice lunch together with our kids in the restaurant and then took them into the gallery.
My son had a GREAT time playing with this installation. We were allowed to walk through it, so we spent an hour stomping our feet on this cool sculpture, while running up the ramps and playing peekaboo through the hoops. This artist obviously understood that some people bring their kids to the gallery.
Notice in the above picture my son is trying to escape. He much prefers museum exploration on his own.
It was a grey, day so I dressed in a new leather-sleeved parka jacket (see my outfit here). After lunch and a visit to the museum we headed out and walked under the porticos for the 20 minute walk to “Piazza Grande”, Bologna’s beautiful Piazza. Bologna is FILLED with porticos, it is the only city where even if it rains you don’t have to bring an umbrella because you can always get to where you are going by following the porticos.
