One of the things I really wanted to do on my road trip move to Utah was visit Liberty Jail in Missouri. Liberty Jail is a historic site for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It is where the prophet Joseph Smith was unjustly imprisoned for about five months awaiting trial. During his time in Liberty Jail, Joseph Smith never lost his faith or denied what he knew instead received certain revelations and gave prophecies which are recorded in the Doctrine and Covenants, today.
At one point during his imprisonment, the Prophet Joseph asked God "Where art though? And where is the pavilion that covereth thy hiding place? How long shall Thy hand be stayed, and Thine eye, yea thy pure eye, behold from the eternal heavens the wrongs of thy people and of thy servants, and thine ears be penetrated with their cries?" The Lord, who knows and understands all responded to him by saying "My son, peace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment; and then, if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high; thou shalt triumph over all thy foes." That is a story that I have turned to during times of trial. It helps me remember that my time is different than The Lord's time. That He knows and can see all things. It has helped me to trust and obey Him, especially in times where I feel as though I can't see my own hand in front of my face.
After our tour of Liberty Jail, we drove into Kansas to spend the night. We were greeted with a beautiful sunset and the best nights sleep I had had in what felt like days. The next morning, we woke early and drove to Abilene, Kansas. It's a small historic town where I was able to meet up with my long-time blog friend, Leah. We had breakfast at a small local diner took some pictures together, and then we were back on the road. The farther west you drive in Kansas the less picturesque it gets. But before that, it is filled with green rolling hills, wind farms, and cute little towns just off the highway.
I am so glad I was able to check off another church history site on my list, meet with a blog friend, and experience both Missouri and Kansas! What is one place you're wanting to check off your must-see list?
