Miracles of Modern Science, aka MOMS, made heads spin with their 2011 LP Dog Year. Last month, they returned with their follow-up EP, MEEMS, which covers even more sonic ground than the full length. MOMS lure us in with their polished, classical front and scientific title, then they leap into psychotic scientist mode, contorting their instruments into experimental monsters and invading our our ears in the best way possible.

“Singularity” is proof — “…There’s no reason to be afraid, we’ll shoot the supplements into our veins so we can reprogram our genes, and let the nanobots swim through our brains to keep our neurons sharp and clean. And we will all transcend biology and merge with our machines, just as long as we can stay alive until the singularity…” But, here’s the twist — we love it! And after it’s over, we come back for more!

Seriously, though, MOMS is making a brand of experimental chamber folk that’s nothing short of alien. In fact, they’ve appropriately dubbed their sound as “orchestral space-pop”. With MEEMS we’re truly seeing the evolution of an act – in their own words, “Our evolution is underway, and it’s exponential.” The light vocals and witty lyrics allow the instrumentation to fizz and bubble up around them, sharing the limelight and balancing the equation of their sound. Two of the six tracks on the EP are instrumentals, showcasing their proficiency — and indeed, they’re scientific scholars of their craft.

Miracles of Modern Science is bold, melodic and mad brilliance. Fans of Ra Ra Riot, you’ve just discovered your new favorite act. Take a listen to MEEMS right away, but don’t say we didn’t warn you about the monster-invasion-of-the-brain-scenario.
