The Velvet Teen (@thevelvetteen) began the night last Tuesday at Webster Hall with synth distortions and head-banging, progressive drums — certainly not the sort of band that allows for casual listening at the bar. Their music was complex and required complete, rapt attention, especially to comprehend the complex patterns produced by the drummer. Sitting right up front with the rest of the band, he actually felt more like a frontman than anyone else. The Velvet Teen has been around for quite a while, releasing their first EP in March of 2000, so be sure  to check out their full catalogue of 9 albums/EPs.

Minus The Bear (@minusthebear) are clearly on their way to becoming legends in the indie world. They first began performing together in 2001, garnering stellar responses to almost every album, particularly Highly Refined Pirates from 2002. Displaying the comfort and familiarity that comes with that sort of career longevity, they played each song flawlessly, earning loud cheers with each one. With such danceable beats and memorable lyrics and melodies, it’s no wonder they’re selling out shows. The ground was quite literally shaking beneath me as the crowd jumped, danced, and shouted the lines of every chorus. Be sure to catch them next time they’re in town.
