Niels Brandt from Minds of 99
I seem to arrive late at a lot of things, but I get there in the end. I shoot electronic music primarily, the scene I have been part of and loved for over 20 years. I only knew Minds of 99 by name and that they were possibly the hottest band in Denmark. Somehow, just before Roskilde Festival I ended up watching their show live from Northside festival in Denmark. I was intrigued, and therefore excited when I saw their name on my shooting schedule for Roskilde, the very last show I was to shoot on day 4.
To say I was blown away was an understatement. The energy, the charisma, the anarchy, the sounds, drum beats, techno influences. I hear a love of electronic music in all of their punk-indi-rock (I just invented that genre) and I love their disregard of structure and order. I have their two albums on repeat, the best Danish albums since Ukendt Kunstner’s Neonlys.
The lyrics. Anyone who knows me, knows my brain just won’t focus on lyrics. The beats, the bass, I don’t do lyrics. Except for Minds of 99. Surely they are writing about me. That’s what it feels like. And they write in Danish.
Sorry, I won’t translate this, it only works in Danish. I really love how new music can still blow me away, be it a concert by Minds of 99 or a DJ dropping a new track – that then turns out to be the band / tune I never knew I always loved.
