A few years ago, controlling everyday objects with our mind used to be limited to only sci-fi movies and novels. That’s a long time ago before we started developing self-driving cars and mind-controlled exoskeletons. It seems like the day we start controlling big things such as cars and other vehicles could become a reality soon, thanks to this graduate student of Design Academy Eindhoven, Alejo Bernal who takes us one step closer to that dream.

Bernal has developed a toy car that can be controlled by using just your mind. He says that focusing your thoughts on moving the car, while wearing the NeuroSky EEG headset enables this toy car recognize and visualize the level of neuronal activity and move it forward.

“As you try to focus, the increased light intensity of the vehicle indicates the level of attention you have reached,” Bernal told Dezeen. “Once the maximum level is achieved and retained for seven seconds, the vehicle starts moving forward. This project helps users to develop deeper, longer concentration by exercising the brain. It is possible for people to train or treat their minds through their own effort and not necessarily using strong medicines, such as ritalin.”

This is yet a prototype of Bernal’s on going project. His main plan is to use this technology to aid in improving concentration skills. It has a long way to go before making this technology available for real vehicles. But, at least now we know it’s not impossible. And who knows, maybe it could happen sooner than we think.
