Less than an hour after center Mike Pouncey's Miami Dolphins lost to the New England Patriots on Sunday in Foxborough, he was approached by Massachusetts State Police and given a grand jury subpoena related to the investigation into Aaron Hernandez and the former tight end's potential involvement in gun trafficking, Sports Illustrated reported.
How much Pouncey, a close friend and a college teammate of Hernandez's at Florida, is involved remains to be seen. Pouncey has not been charged with a crime.
Police view him as a witness who could help in the investigation, Sports Illustrated reported.
"Organizationally, we do not have a comment," Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene told Sports Illustrated. "And Mike Pouncey does not have a comment."
According to the report, two state police members went up to Pouncey in the hallway between the Dolphins locker room and the team bus and handed him the subpoena.
"It's about a grand jury investigation," one official could be heard telling Pouncey, Sports Illustrated reported. The same police official later said, "Make sure you arrive."
Mike and his twin brother, Maurkice (of the Pittsburgh Steelers), were photographed during the offseason wearing hats that read "Free Hernandez."
While Maurkice, an All-Pro center who suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 1, apologized for wearing the hat, Mike elected not to discuss the matter in July.
The Steelers travel to New England next week. I wonder if Maurkice is going to get served? If he travels with the team him being in Mass. would be the time that makes sense if he were to be served.
