Introduction

Claims of long battery life and good looking selfies with impressive camera features Gionee has offered up to the mark in its recently-launched Gionee A1 smartphone. A1 has nothing really to dislike and that makes it a great product in its price segment around 20,000 INR.

Hardware/ Design

Premium and compact built quality of A1 which is made by the A6000 aircraft-grade material offers durability in the design department. 4010 mAh battery and the large screen make an A1 phone a bit bulky than Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime and Moto M that weigh less.

Metal Constructed Gionee A1 Review

Gionee A1 with a metallic unibody, rounded metallic sides and back displays the current build quality standard in smartphones. Gionee A1 gives solid and premium feels better than Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and Moto G5 Plus smartphones. Because of the sturdy grip, it's also easy to hold and convenient to use with one hand even with its big display. The volume and power buttons are on the right edge, while the SIM card tray is on the left. Micro-USB port along with mono speaker is at the bottom, while the 3.5mm audio jack fixed is on the top.

The front is equipped with 5.5-inch display covered with a 2.5D curved glass and 16MP selfie-shooter, soft flash (Gionee calls it "Selfie Flash"), earpiece and proximity sensor.

And the primary camera with dual-LED flash, as well as a circular Gionee logo is placed at the back. At the bottom of the back, Gionee also has printed its name. A1 uses a MediaTek SoC, the Helio P10 MT6755 which features an octa-core processor and a Mali-T860MP2 GPU and paired with 4 GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage space. Onboard storage can be further expanded up to 128GB using microSD cards with a hybrid SIM tray. 4G LTE with VoLTE support, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS/A-GPS, FM Radio, microUSB with OTG support and a 3.5 mm headphone jack are main connectivity features A1 has. Others features of A1 are a hybrid dual-SIM, fingerprint sensor, Amigo 4.0 UI based on Android 7.0 OS and a large 4,010 mAh battery.

Display

5.5 inches AMOLED panel with Full HD Resolutions (1920×1080 pixels) and 401ppi display density manage to deliver what it claims of visual experience with accurate color and contrast for images and videos. I love AMOLED display because of its neat, vivid and sharp looks and for smooth and quick touch response. We are having three different color profiles in the display settings-warm, neutral and cool that offers great visual experience without any complaint. The pixel density of 401ppi of Gionee A1 offers excellent multimedia experience with excellent viewing angles and without reducing the quality. Overall A1 is perfect in delivering a pleasant experience.

From low to moderate usage on 4G connectivity, A1 with three battery saving modes offers more than 40 hours backup and Standby Time about 400 hours on a single charge.

User interface

A1 comes with Gionee's Amigo 4.0 UI layer baked on top. Multiple home screens are used to arrange all the apps as there is no app drawer in Gionee A1. Gionee's Amigo UI layer supports nifty customization features such as mood wallpapers, GIFs, and up to 1300 emojis. Colorful interface and bright icons really look good on A1.

Performance

Octa-core MediaTek processor clocked at 2.0GHz, paired with 4GB of RAM has successfully handled day to day performance jobs.

During our review period, the smartphone performed really well and we haven't found any performance lag. Graphics-heavy games such as Temple Run 2 can be played with an ease at 30fps on the Gionee A1 and can satisfy a gaming user with its decently playable performance. Ensures multitasks on a smooth level but A1 slow down at the time of app switching like Facebook, Whatsapp, Gmail etc.

And also freeze the phone while playing high-end games like Asphalt 8 etc. on a stretch. Gionee A1 tends to heat up on aggressively after graphic greedy gaming. Apart from that, overall performance is pretty awesome.

Audio and video quality

One downside we have with the A1 is the lack of 4k video recording. A1 Offers decent call quality, audio quality and VoLTE network connectivity in the price category.

The fingerprint is also very quick and releases the handset near instantly.

Camera

Being heavily marketed as a selfie phone, Gionee A1 succeeds to capture the attention of an audience obsessed with selfies and smartly deliver on the promises. On the front of the camera, Gionee A1 has given amazing results with well-saturated colors and decent details in each lighting scenario with the rear and front camera.

Gionee A1 is equipped with a 13-megapixel autofocus rear camera with dual LED-flash and f/2.0 aperture, 1.12um pixel size and phase detection autofocus and a 16-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture and soft flash.

Photos from the rear camera come with well-balanced colors, full of detail, crisp and clear with minimal noise. A1 captures great details in well-lit situations and low light images are also impressed by the users. Camera app with numerous shooting modes is quite handy and worked well. To enhance the selfies, beautification feature is also added and also allows users to capture multiple images and create GIFs from them. With Face beauty mode we can adjust the facial features such as skin tone, eyes to look better.

I am completely impressed with the image quality and can say Gionee A1 successfully holds its grounds on camera department with a solid reason.

Price and best deals

Gionee A1 selfie smartphone is priced at Rs 19,999.

Conclusion

I would recommend this decent and metallic constructed premium phone to all the users who want a solid option with vivid display, competent camera with excellent selfie paraphernalia and great performance in this price segment for lightweight or moderate usage.
