Mayweather-v-Canelo-undef-004.jpgOn September 14, 2013 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will square off in what should be one of the greatest fights in recent history. Both fighters enter this bout undefeated, which adds to the hype already surrounding the match. It could easily break pay-per-view television records.
Mayweather enters the fight with a 44-0-0 record, boasting 26 KO’s. He’s 14 years Canelo’s senior at 36 years old, 5’8” and has a 72” reach. He’s the highest paid athlete in the world, and he is guaranteed $41.5 million for this battle, win or lose. ESPN has called him the “last of the great American prizefighters.” He’s taken criticism for picking easy opponents, and after the fail attempt at fighting Pacquiao, the media and fans spoke even more negatively of him.
His most recent fights were against Robert Guerrero and Miguel Cotto. Guerrero and Cotto were both fighters that media and fans were calling for him to fight. Cotto was a number one ranked fighter, and Mayweather later said he was the toughest fighter he ever faced. The fight with Guerrero was a unanimous decision; Mayweather dominated him after the first couple rounds.
Canelo’s record is 42-0-1, with 30 KO’s. He has youth on his side, at 22, and is 5’9” with a reach of 70.5”. The redhead Mexican fighter is ranked at number 10 by Ring. “El Canelo” means cinnamon, redhead, or redheaded horse in Spanish. All seven of his brothers were boxers. Critics have said that Canelo isn’t a fair matchup with Mayweather due to his youth and inexperience.
His last fight was against Austin Trout earlier this year. Canelo’s victory was attributed to his power and movement throughout the match. Trout was dealt his first knockdown ever in the seventh round of his fight with Canelo. Trout was favored to win the bout, but Canelo prevailed in a unanimous decision. Canelo and his camp say they are prepared to fight Mayweather; they are looking to deal the greatest pound for pound boxer his first defeat.
Both fighters have been very quiet leading up to this match. Mayweather said that there’s no point in trash talking since Canelo doesn’t speak English, and Canelo has chosen to do all his trash talking inside the ring. Former boxer Oscar De La Hoya has predicted a win for Canelo. Mike Tyson was cautious to predict a Mayweather win, citing Canelo’s strength and Mayweather’s experience.
The odds as of August 20, 2013, were -300 Mayweather and +230 for Canelo. For those who don’t know how to read boxing odds, this means that Mayweather is the favorite to win the fight 3 to 1. For every $3.00 you bet on Mayweather, you win $1.00. If you bet $300 on Mayweather to win, you would win $100. If he lost, you would lose $300. Canelo is the underdog. For every $1.00 you bet for Canelo, you would win $2.30. So, if you bet $100 on Canelo and he wins, you would win $230. If he loses, you would only lose your original $100.
Mayweather is quick, disciplined, and likes to fight in the middle of the ring. Canelo is young, powerful, and will try to get Mayweather against the ropes. I think this fight is going to be close, but ultimately I think that Mayweather will get the decision. I don’t believe there will be a knockout, but I do think it’s going to be a GREAT fight!! Let’s hear your predictions to the outcome of the fight...
