Like a lot of liberals, I don't believe very much in "the magic of markets." Too often the "magic" is just rich people grabbing stuff. My wife, however, has told me about an "industry" that has modestly boosted my confidence in market solutions. The companies are called Designated Driver Services. When you find yourself impaired in a bar and your car in the parking lot, you call one up. They send out two guys, each in a car. Once they get to your location, one drives you home in your car while the other follows. At your house, you pay your bill, and they leave for their next job. No drunk driving, no errand in the morning. Amanda says some of them let you buy a discounted pass good for a month or a year. Kind of like being a frequent flyer.
