Marika Hackman – Deep Green
SoundCloud
Marika Hackman can’t stop, won’t stop — and nobody wants her to. The 21 year old artist released her Sugar Rush EP in December, and just dropped a fresh track from her next EP, Deaf Heat, out in April. A master at setting the tone both in initial sounds and album cover art, “Deep Green” begins with a jungle rhythm and eerie Hackman howl harmonies.
The elements she gravitates towards may reveal a trend — spooky, sincere, savage – but the structures and melodies never cease to enthrall. Part of the reason her music is so compelling is because she has the ability to tap into her most carnal instincts and re-emerge with stories to tell about the wild darkness within that most of us are aware of, yet have difficulty accessing. “Deep Green” finds her grappling with weighty impulse: “Just because I love your skin doesn’t mean I’ll jump in/The water’s clean and warm and green/I’m not allowed to swim/I’m scared of getting in”, once again articulating with such poetic primitivity that we immediately relate.
Marika Hackman’s Deaf Heat EP is set for release April 14th. Listen to “Deep Green” above and keep your eyes on her SoundCloud page for more from the EP before then, as per her usual trend.
