Jeremy Lloyd and Samantha Gongol have come together again as Marian Hill to create a seductive, electronic dialog with their newest track, “Down”. They cleverly exchange energy throughout, and it’s personified through Gongol’s relationship with the background. The song begins with mysterious piano, but as soon as Gongol begins singing, our fixation turns toward her — and it remains that way throughout the entire piece, leaving space for her lyrics to take control. Gongol’s vocals are tempting, coy and flirtatious, but she dexterously maintains composure while the electronics are fanatic and fervent. “Down” isn’t only effective because it’s able to stimulate all the senses, but because it toys with power in a playful, yet provocative way.
