Man Cuts Log; Finds 2 Perfect Crosses

By Eowyn @DrEowyn

Shelley Terrey reports for Ohio’s Star Beacon that on April 2, 2015, two men in the city of Ashtabula, Bob Brobst and Kyle Sidley, found the markings of two perfect crosses when they split open a log.

Bob Probst finds cross in cut log

Robert Brobst is a trustee of Saybrook Township in Ohio’s Ashtabula County and owner of Brobst Tree and Stump Service. He and Sidley were using a log splitting machine when they split a large log of soft maple and each half had the marking of a ¾-inch-by-½-inch cross.

Brobst said, “I looked at Kyle and he looked at me. What are the odds of splitting it [the cross] exactly in two? That is really special.”

Sidley said it has to be a 1 in 1 million shot, “When I saw it, I said, ‘Whoa! It’s Holy Week and we found a cross!’”

Brobst said he’s going to varnish the pieces of wood and “save it forever.”

When asked to explain what natural event could have caused the marking of a black cross inside the log, Brobst said it could have been a piece of metal, like a nail someone pounded into the tree, but that doesn’t explain the crossbar.

Using tree-ring dating, Brobst estimates the event occurred more than 25 years ago.
