Via NY Post: Female teachers at a Swiss high school won’t be getting any handshakes from their male Muslim students anymore — and local officials are outraged.
Two teen students got a school in the northern municipality of Therwil to rule that they can forgo the Swiss custom of shaking their instructor’s hand because it violates their religious beliefs, according to The Local.
But the decision angered many local leaders including Justice Minister Simonetta Sommaruga, who went on TV Monday blasting the new policy, insisting “shaking hands is part of our culture. We cannot tolerate that women in the public service are treated differently from me,” said Christopher Eymann, who runs the Swiss Conferences of Cantonal Ministers of Education.
Muslim groups stood behind the decision, arguing that the students were not trying to be impolite. “One would think that the continued existence of Switzerland’s core values was at stake, when this particular case in fact involves just two high school students who have said they wish to greet their teacher in a different way than with a handshake,” Switzerland’s Islamic Central Council said in a statement.
The Quran, the religious book of Islam, forbids men from touching women who are not members of their immediate families or their wives.
I discovered last night (via Hot Air), that the boys are brothers, ages 14 and 15, and one of them posted material on his Facebook page in support of ISIS, the Basler Zeitung online newspaper reported. This information came from USA Today.
