Make Two Flavor Cupcakes
When people make cupcakes, they usually make a one-flavor cake batter to use, creating cupcakes that are all the same. If they wanted different flavors, they would make a different cake batter and make a new batch of cupcakes.
But what if you wanted two flavors in one cupcake?
I'm sure it can be done using some baking secret, but let me tell you a secret of my own: I am not a baker, nor do I possess any baking skills capable of producing a two flavor cupcake. I can't even imagine the mess I would make trying such a feat!
Luckily, Batter Babies by Kimber Cakeware has solved that problem. Made in Ohio in the U.S., Batter Babies are small food-safe plastic cake batter dividers that make it easy to create two flavor cupcakes. They come in packs of 6 for around $4.99.
Batter Babies are simple to use: you place them in the cupcake pan (with or without liners), pour in two different flavored or colored batters, and take the Batter Babies back out.
I decided to make cupcakes of my two favorite batters: chocolate and confetti. I used cake box mixes to make them.
As you can see, I asked my assistant to help with the batters. She had no problem with that!
After placing the Batter Babies in the cupcake liners, I started to spoon in the batter. What I quickly came to realize was that it was a little difficult using the spoons I was using to get the batter in without making a mess. I switched to ice cream scoopers, which helped a bit.
I may have made a mess with the batter...
I then began to take out the Batter Babies. The batter stuck to them, so I had to take each one out slowly and carefully so that I did not mix up the batters. Here's my result:Before I baked the first batch of cupcakes.
My first batch, baked
I decided to try again, but this time I sprayed each of the Batter Babies with non-stick spray, which helped when I took them out of the batter. Here's my second result, which looks much better:
I have come to three conclusions about my process:
- I should have used pastry bags or squeeze bottles to get the batter in without making a mess.
- Using the spray make the process much quicker.
- Having a second set of the Batter Babies would have made everything a bit quicker since I wouldn't have had to clean off the first set before using them again with new batter.
Here's a demonstration using Batter Babies:
What I like:
- Simplifies the process of making two flavor/color cupcakes (or even three flavors if you're creative!)
- Made in the USA using quality food-grade products
What I would suggest:
- Making a pack of 12 or even 24 instead of just 6 cupcake dividers
- Adding to the directions that a bit of non-stick spray helps
