According to the Hindu calendar, Mahashivaratri is celebrated on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month. According to mythological beliefs, Shivling was originated on Mahashivaratri and on this day Lord Vishnu and Brahma first worshiped Shivling.On Mahashivaratri, special worship of Lord Shiva, fasting and Jalabhishek are performed. On Mahashivaratri, there is special significance of worshiping Bho Bholebhandari at night along with worshiping throughout the day. According to religious belief, the marriage of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati took place on this day.
