Once upon a time long, long ago, there was a hidden park where giants, men, fairies, dwarves, animals and other creatures frolicked daily. Where everyone, despite their different backgrounds came together in perfect harmony just to chill.
You could find them among giant hammocks, beds and healing Jacuzzis and listening to music that seemed to come directly from the throats of angels. Plenty of fresh, juicy fruit and drink was available and your inner self could shine through your creative pursuits.
All this sounds like a fairy tale, but in Amsterdam from 19 to 28 August, the myth is made real. In a secret location in Amsterdam East called Oostpunt, the ultimate chill park comes alive with the 2011 Magnet Festival.
The concept is simple. An oasis of cushions and hangout space, a low-tempo dance floor with highly emotional music, where everyone can let loose and discover themselves and new friends. All amid the magical and enchanting scenery of Oostpunt’s beach.
But despite the truly unique atmosphere of the Magnet Festival, the real draw is their community concept. Everyone is invited to participate in the festival and contribute to the content of the event.
“No spectators, only participators� is the Magnet philosophy. To create something special you need to work together. Whether it is a simple as joining in a karaoke gig, playing a bit of acoustic guitar at the bar or organising a full-on theater production, everyone is encouraged to bring their creative talents to the festival.
But relaxation is also important for creativity, says Magnet. And the festival has gone to great lengths to produce the fairy tale setting they imagine as synonymous with festival chill.
In the shade, or in the sun, you can be busy with your activity, dancing or just lounging in an area surrounded with decorations such as giant mushrooms, unicorns and psychedelic trees. There is also a fairytale bed frame with two giant gym mats where giant hammocks hang, swing sets sway and a huge Jacuzzi bubbles with fresh and healing water.
The Magnet crew knows exactly how to create a chill environment, and for them music is an essential part. Sounds on slow speed, danceable for those who want to, but also ideal for chilling out include soundscapes, groove, emotional song, and house beats.
With “Leave no Trace� as motto, it’s clear that durability plays an important part in the Magnet Festival. Participants are expected to keep durability in mind when building and breaking down whatever creative venture they have in mind.
Amsterdam East is a special place – made even more special by this enchanting festival – and the hope is not only to leave it in its original state, but maybe make it a bit cleaner. Who knows, some fairies may even will lend a hand.
