What is Manglik or Mangala Dosha and Why Should You Care About It?
According to Vedic Astrology, the time of birth and the relative positions of the sun, the moon, and the planets have a major role to play in determining the personality of the individual as well the individual's interactions with others.
This is one of the key reasons parents in India looking to get their children married, consider astrological match as a key requirement for matchmaking.
One of the key aspects they look for in a horoscope is if the match has Mangala Dosha.
Being a Manglik or afflicted with Mangala Dosha (also known as Kujadosha) refers to a certain position of planet Mars ( Mangal in Sanskrit or Hindi, Sevvai in Tamil, Angaraka in Telugu) corresponding to the segment of the time slot associated with the birth of an individual (also known as the Lagna or Ascendant) that is determined by the position of the earth as it rotates around its own axis in relation to the Sun.
So what does this mean for the individual afflicted with the Mangala Dosha (aka Manglik)?
A person who has the Mangala Dosha will face marital issues if the spouse is not a Manglik. The Manglik in a marriage ends up being victimised by the spouse and goes through serious hardship throughout the marriage. Eventually, the marriage ends in a separation or divorce. That's why Mangliks are not considered suitable for marriage if the prospective match is not a Manglik.
The only recourse a Manglik has is to find another Manglik to marry as the negative effects of being a Manglik are nullified by the spouse's status as a Manglik.

Fundamental Concepts of Mangala Dosha
There are two key factors that together determine the presence of Mangala Dosha.
1. The position of Mars in the individual's horoscope.
2. The Lagna or Ascendant in relation to the position of Mars.
Wondering why?
For Mangliks, the position of Mars in the horoscope in relation to the Lagna or Ascendant affects married life in terms of
Individual's personality Personality of the spouse Marital harmony Reproduction Sex lifeAll these parameters directly impact the success of a marriage.
The unique position of Mars and the Lagna can come together creating several scenarios that determine the severity and the impact of the Mangala Dosha on the married life of an individual.
Vedic astrology has identified four scenarios that determine if an individual is Manglik.1. Mars is in the 1st house unless placed in Aries (Mesha).
2. Mars in the 4th house unless placed in Scorpio (Vrishchika).
3. Mars in the 7th house unless placed in Capricorn or Pisces (Makara).
4. Mars in the 8th house unless placed in Cancer (Karkatakam).
5. Mars in the 12th house unless placed in Sagittarius (Dhanas).
So how can you find out the position of Mars in your horoscope?
Let's look at a sample Vedic horoscope created for an individual who is a Manglik.
In the above horoscope, Lagna is in Midhuna/Gemini and Mars is in Vrishabam/Taurus.
If you start counting from the position of Lagna to the position of Mars, the value is 12 as shown in the horoscope. The only exception would have been if Mars was in Dhanas/Saggitarius which is not the case in this horoscope. Hence the horoscope has the Mangala Dosha.
Here is the horoscope of a person who is not a Manglik.
In this horoscope, Lagna is in Midhuna/Gemini and Mars is in Mesha/Aries. Counting the position of Mars from Lagna, we have 11 which corresponds to the absence of Mangala Dosha.
Finally, let's look at the horoscope of a person who looks like a Manglik based on the relative positions of Lagna and Mars.
However, even if the relative positions of Lagna and Mars is 1, the person is not a Manglik because Mars happens to be Mesha/Aries.
Understanding Lagna or Ascendant
The presence of Mangala Dosha is always calculated in relation to the Lagna or Ascendant.
So what is Lagna or Ascendant?
The basic premise of astrology (both Vedic as well as western) is the concept of signs or house.
Every 30 degrees of space around earth corresponds to a sign or house. Hence there are 12 signs from Aires (Mesha in Vedic astrology) to Pisces (Meenam in Vedic astrology) that add up to 360 degrees.
Interestingly, if we divide 24 hours in a day (the time the earth takes to rotate once in its own axis) by 2 hours, you have 12 slots that correspond to the 12 signs or houses. From sunrise to sunset, the day is divided into 6 slots and similarly, from sunset to sunrise, the night is divided into 6 slots. This is true if you consider any place in the equator.
These 2-hour slots denote the Lagna or Ascendant and correspond to the position of the sun in the sky relative to the place, date and time of birth.
In other words, depending on the time of day or night you are born, you are associated with a Lagna belonging to the house the sun is associated with.
For example, if you are born at 6 am in April in a place that's on or near the equator, your Lagna will be in the first time slot that's associated with the Mesha/Aries sign and it matches the position of the Sun as well.
A person born on the same day/month but at 10 pm will have the Lagna at Dhanas/Saggitarious.
The house associated with your Lagna will vary depending on the location of your birth and the associated time at which the sun rises and the duration of the day at the time of your birth.
Let's find out what happens when you live closer to the poles.
In such instances, the day might last longer than 12 hours and the duration of every Lagna position when the sun is in the sky may be longer than 2 hours.
In the above example, the person born at 10 PM in the month of June will have the Lagna position in Thula/Libra. If the same person was born at the time in a place closer to the equator, the Lagna position would have been either Vrishchika/Scorpio or Dhanas/Saggitarius.
As the earth revolves around the sun and as the months progress from April, the house associated with the sun at sunrise moves one slot. That's why your Lagna is also dependent on the month you are born in addition to the time of birth and location.
What is the nature of a person who is Manglik?
There are two important characteristics of a Manglik.
1. They are always attracted towards a non-Manglik
2. They do not have any attraction towards a Manglik
This is a classic catch 22 situation!
If a Manglik marries a non-Manglik, they are destined to have a miserable marriage that will end in a divorce or separation. However, they will always experience a strong attraction to people who are non-Manglik!
The only option for them to remedy the Mangala Dosha is to marry a person who is also a Manglik. However, they have no attraction or experience no chemistry with other Mangliks!
Here is an extract from the book Ancient Hindu Astrology for the Modern Western Astrologer by James T. Braha that best describes the situation faced by Mangliks.
" The mechanics of Kujadosha are such that it causes a person to be attracted to a partner who by his very nature cannot blend or function compatibility for any great length of time with that person. Therefore, one is quite simply at the mercy of his fate.Yet perhaps the most significant problem is that a person with Kujadosha will not feel much physical attraction or any special chemistry for another who also has the condition."

The Fundamental Basis For Manglik Calculation
In order to understand the basis for calculating Mangala Dosha, we may have to understand yet another astrological term called the Aspect.
What is an Aspect?
According to astronomy, every planet and the sun exert gravitational forces on each other and the combination of these complex set of forces determines the planetary orbits around the sun. The influence that the planets have over other planets is called Aspect.
According to Vedic Astrology, here is how different planets influence different houses irrespective of their position in the birth chart.
Mercury - 1 and 7 Venus - 1 and 7 Sun - 1 and 7 Mars - 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12 Jupiter - 1, 5, 7 and 9 Saturn - 1, 3, 7 and 10How is Aspect connected to Mangala Dosha?
Notice the houses influenced by Mars? This explains why someone is a Manglik if their relative Lagna-Mars position is 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12.
