Earlier this December, students walking in a Northern California university came upon this grotesque sight:
KTXL Fox40 reports, Dec. 15, 2013, that Christina Edwards, a black senior at Sacramento State University, “lynched” two white men by hanging them from a tree with a thick rope, and calls it “performance art.”
The men were reportedly actors and were in no real danger during the project. The “lynching” took place during the day while students were still on campus, before Sacramento State University began its Christmas-New Year break.
Edwards defended her project to KTXL Fox40: “The purpose of this performance was to bring to light social injustices and the issue of inequality that impacts me and my community as a whole.” She says she chose to illustrate this time in history by using race reversal, in an effort to shine new light on an old but standing matter, and that she had followed all campus procedures.
But the university doesn’t see it that way. Sacramento State University President Alexander Gonzalez released a statement that says, in part: “The university did not approve the display, and I want to assure everyone that I am working to address the multiple issues raised by this incident.”
