When I was a child, my mother used to read me the books she'd loved herself when she was growing up. So I was very familiar with all those glorious childrens' classic writers of the early twentieth century -- Frances Hodgson Burnett, Edith Nesbitt, Louisa M. Alcott, Susan Coolidge. But for some reason, we never got onto Lucy Maud Montgomery. While I can't exactly say I feel I missed out, I do think I'd have adored the adventures of Anne of Green Gables and all her delightful successors. Still, better late than never, and I've now read quite a few of LMM's wonderful novels and become a terrific fan. So when her biography was called for for SNB, I was pleased to write it, and you can read it here. She had quite a tragic life, but one that was sprinkled with moments of intense joy. The same issue also has an excellent review of one of LMM's lesser known novels, A Tangled Web -- well worth checking out.
