The proverbial wicked mother in law has been the brunt of jokes for many years now, but what about the wicked sister in law?  The sad reality of most people’s lives is that the woman of the family is in charge of the social relationships of the family. She decides who gets invited for Sunday dinners, whether phone messages get passed on, and which family invitations are accepted.  Your sister in law is literally the gate keeper for whether or not you not only get to see, but even if you have a good relationship with your brother and your nieces and nephews.

Therefore, based on my vast experience, I have formulated a list of ten things you should not do if you want to avoid being labeled the wicked sister in law.

  1. Don’t invite your sister in law and her family for dinner and make them sit in the kitchen because your friends are eating in the dining room and there is no more room.
  2. Don’t tell your sister in law to come at 2:00 when dinner is not planned until 4:00, leaving them in the living room while you finish showering and dressing.
  3. Don’t “go get” your husband for his sister who is calling, and then forget to tell him, leaving her hanging on the line.
  4. Don’t answer the phone breathlessly, find out it’s your sister in law and say, “Oh, I rushed to answer the phone because I thought it was somebody important.”
  5. Don’t take the hors d’oeuvre your sister in law brought and put it in the refrigerator and forget about it.
  6. Don’t tell your sister in law that you only give your cell phone number to close friends and family.
  7. Don’t email your sister in law after a party and tell her she should not have discussed politics, homosexuality, or obesity with her friends because they may have been offended.
  8. Don’t send three page stream of consciousness emails to anyone, especially not your sister in law.
  9. Don’t tell your sister and brother in law that everyone was going home after your daughter’s afternoon wedding reception, only for them to find out that everyone went dancing.
  10. Don’t make your sister and brother in law sleep on the twin bed in your son’s old room when the full sized bed in the guest room is empty.

I’d have a complex if I didn’t know that this SIL was not only wicked, but also had a loose screw. And writing about it is such sweet revenge!

If your brother is getting married you should consider doing a background check first. One of the top 5 background check services can verify your new sister in law doesn’t have a record. Best of all, it only takes a few minutes!
