They sent Tony Sanchez to AA as well, same deal as Locke, will be recalled on Sept. 3rd with everyone else. I guess they had to make room for Byrd and Buck? Gomez or Cumpton to pitch in Locke's spot until he comes back?
I imagine that Gomez has pitched well enough to get the start, but who knows

They need something. This team has been on a tailspin since going to Colorado.
Locke has been just a dud since the all star break. Might as well shake it up a bit. My fear is they will get to 80 wins, with 12 games left and then go on a season ending losing streak. I just wish they could get a 5 game win streak starting today to finally rid the curse once and for all. But, man... the curse seems to all the sudden be propping back up as the homestretch nears.
By sending them to AA, they can bring them back up sooner than the 10 days if they'd sent them to AAA because Altoona's season ends sooner.
Strictly an "on paper" move, but a smart one.
I figured they would send whoever was sent down to AA, I even though A+ was in play seeing as there season ends a day sooner than Altoona's. Both should be back on Tuesday and while both are now technically ineligible for the postseason either one could easily take Karstens, Irwin or McKenry's spot on the roster should we decide we need one of them.
With Locke down somebody has to start on Sunday. My guess would be Gomez but I wouldn't mind seeing Pimentel get a look. The Pirates have to make a decision with him before next year anyway since he'll be out of options and he has really settled in nicely at AAA having gone 6 or more innings while allowing 2 or less walks in each of his last 11 starts.
