New York’s Little Sur (@littlesur) has generated a great deal of buzz given that they’ve has only played a few shows. Led by NYU seniors Jesse Aicher and Josh Meer, this indie folk outfit has already landed one of their songs on hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother. “A Retrospective’s Bliss”, from their eponymously-titled debut EP, has a back porch appeal that manages to be both whimsical and rootsy, making me crave some small town charm and down home cooking. “Barbarosa”, another standout track, features simple guitar lines that dovetail together, creating a tightly woven tapestry that supports Olivia Gerber’s sultry, honest vocals.
The broken down instrumentation, accentuated by the no-frills production, focuses our attention on the strength of the songwriting — and what a strength it is. Little Sur stands tall without using overtly slick production as a crutch, a malady all too common with today’s indie bands. With an early success that many bands work years to achieve, don’t expect Little Sur to stay little for much longer. Their EP is available on Bandcamp as pay what you wish.
