Listen to Your Background Music

By Stacylrust
“I feel there are two people inside me – me and my intuition. If I go against her, she’ll screw me every time, and if I follow her, we get along quite nicely.”
-Kim Basinger

When it comes to making important decisions in your life or business, I find the best advice is to listen to your background music.

Here’s what I mean by that…

When you’re watching a movie, have you ever noticed that you can tell whether the main character is about to make a good or bad decision based on the music playing? When the music is inspirational, happy and upbeat, you know the character is going down the right path. When the music is ominous and foreboding you know the character is making a terrible choice.

For instance, in a horror movie, when a person is walking down an empty hallway and dark music starts playing, it’s obvious the person is about to be attacked by the villain. You start to feel nervous and uncomfortable because you know something bad is about to happen.

Our instincts and intuitions serve as our real life background music.

Our emotions can be considered cues to whether or not the decisions we make are good or bad. Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio studied those who had received damage to the brain in the area that controlled emotions. What he found was that those people were either incapable of making decisions or consistently made decisions that were not in their best interest. It turns out, our emotions are our only way of making decisions that suite us. When we have only logic and analytical skills, we cannot make good decisions.

Emotion must play a role.

While it is important to analyze a decision, and look at the pros and cons of your options, it is also important to listen to your gut and trust in your feelings.

If you let it, life will you pull you in the right direction and you will feel that pull deep down in your stomach.

As you go through life, picture yourself as the leading guy or gal of your movie and listen to your background music. Make decisions that feel right way down deep in your soul, because I promise you those are the right decisions.

That’s not to say that your right path won’t present resistance, because undoubtedly it will. When we follow our true calling and make decisions that will lead us to magnificent lives of happiness and fulfillment, it often involves taking big risks. This will bring out fear, doubt, and anxiety. It is often very difficult to follow your true path because it isn’t the “safe” option. It is the one that requires you to be bold and daring.

Logic will only get you so far, so limit the amount of stress you place on it. Follow your heart and make decisions that not only look good on paper but also feel right. Once you’ve made your decision, commit fully and trust your instincts.

Humans were given an amazing sense of intuition, be sure not to let it go to waste.
