Everything I can dig up about Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Sean McMahon, aka Workman Song, is magically peculiar. When he’s not playing bass for Streets of Laredo, McMahon can be found playing for churches that meet in bars and on his own around the city as Workman Song. Like a Bob Dylan-Edward Sharpe hybrid, Workman Son is a gritty, freewheeling folk project that whittles and leans its way into your heart by way of earnest, amber-toned songs exploring the edges of faith. Describing his most recent release, Lamb, as “a collection of musical stories, hymns and lyrical parables recorded at the Hangar, a massive DIY barn studio in what I am only permitted to refer to as ‘The Ice Cream Forest,’ located in rural New Jersey near Asbury Park” only further convinces us that Workman Song is some sort of cult, possibly involving ice cream, just waiting to happen. We’re among the first converts, but we’re sure soon you’ll be joining us. I’ll stop being creepy now and just ask you to listen to “No, It’s Not” from Workman Song’s new EP, Lamb, above, and get your own copy here.
