Annie Eve’s debut EP was one of my favorite recordings of 2013 and continues to make weekly appearances on my playlists. I’m not sure if it’s the thick warmth of her voice, her delicate delivery or the campfire vibe of her sound, but there’s something about her formula that holds me rapt each time I listen.

Two weeks ago she released “Southern”, the first single from her next EP, and I got the feeling I always get when an artist I adore presents new work — excited, nervous and positive I won’t love it as much as their previous work. Well, dammit if “Southern” isn’t just as gorgeous as everything I’ve heard from her and more. It carries with it that same restrained glow, this time with an added touch of twang. Reflecting on lost love from behind the bar, she tenderly confesses: “I never got bored of you/I never got bored of us/I never got tired of it/I never got tired of us.” Surrendering to a classic country touchstone, “Southern” ends with her begging him to stay.
