A few months ago, Wooderson Slater caught our full attention with the entrancing atmosphere of “The Lake”, the only track to his name at the time. Today we present his second with pure excitement. “The Day” continues in a similar trend as the first with a highly ambient, dreamy build. Shrouded in lo-fi clouds, Wooderson Slater tells us a tragic tale of loss. The story begins with dreary Youth Lagoon-esque minimalism as a couple splits, then picks up in intensity as she finds out he let her go only to spare her. As the track builds to an emotional climax, he experiences regret for making her go while she frantically makes her way back to him only to find he has already passed. “Tick Tock/The crow knocks/The lights are dimming/Her life is spinning/Tick Tock/The crow knocks/His life is slipping/He wished for living.” The story ends with ardent repetitions of “I won’t go” just before it breaks into fragile whistles.
Even without knowing the story, “The Day” deftly captures a melancholic air with drowsy pacing, a feeling that gradually lifts into a near frenzy via drums and enlivened pace. Truly everything about the song is affecting, from start to finish, and each time it ends, we wish for more from Wooderson Slater. For now, we’ll be more than satisfied with “The Day”, his second beautiful installment which you can hear above.
