The first of what should be many dismissals on the Red Sox brain trust occurred today, as pitching coach Bob McClure was fired.
Assistant coach Randy Niemann takes over for the remainder of the year. Niemann becomes the third pitching coach for the Sox since the highly respected John Farrell left to become the Blue Jays manager in 2010.
Carl Crawford's season has come to an end, as he will have Tommy John surgery this Thursday. It is expected that he will make a full recovery. Whether he will be ready in time for the start of the 2013 season is questionable, as the surgery's recovery time for non-pitchers is still from 6-9 months. It's a wise move by the Red Sox, as playing him any more in this lost season is simply foolish.
