Leaving the NFL

Posted on the 08 January 2014 by Erictheblue

John Moffitt is the former NFL (and University of Wisconsin) football player who forfeited over a million dollars of salary by retiring--or maybe it's called "quitting" when you're as young as he (27) and do it in the middle of the season--from football last year.  His decision also came about a year before he would have become vested in the pension plan of the NFL Players' Association.  He had a lot of explaining to do, for people are always startled when someone deliberately chooses not to get as much money as possible.

Moffitt said (among other things):

I've saved enough. . . .  I'm sitting here and I got to this point and I was like, what is the number that you need?  How much do you really need?  What do you want in life?  And I decided that I don't really need to be a millionaire.

Talk about hearing a different drummer!  He was an offensive lineman, so maybe it's true: they hit their heads so hard so often that it's not long before they can't think straight.  The "other things" he said included that he had been reading the Dalai Lama and Noam Chomsky.  Reading!  What a fool.  You have to do it in school, a little, keep up your athletic eligibility, but more than that will mess you up, man.
