Last Week Tonight: More Than a Satire?

TAKEAWAY: Talk about frequency of publication! A new HBO show promises to cover breaking news once a week, on Sundays. Are they on to something?

I could not help but stop and take a second look at the billboard just before I entered the New York Subway to get to my class at Columbia University.

It’s advertising for a new HBO show properly titled Last Week Tonight, which the show’s website promotes as a satirical view at the week in news, politics and current events.

“No matter when the news breaks, we will cover it on Sunday,” says John Oliver, star of the show and a former correspondent with The Daily Show with John Stewart. “Breaking news on a weekly basis.”

Much is said about frequency of publication these days.

We often discuss the constant flow of news (which can numb us), versus the curated variety (which can surprise us and give us a sense that we can catch our breath with the news in the digital age).

Now, this show emphasizes weekly, no matter when the news breaks. It’s all fun, based on the promo teasers available in the show’s website.

And, of course, it is all curated.
