LANY is a project between three friends (Paul Klein, Les Priest, and Jake Goss), that, up until about a year, no one had really heard of. Their music was all made on a Dell laptop whilst the three lived in an apartment together. The trio self-released some material online, and unsurprisingly, those songs quickly picked up steam, as they mixed R&B, pop, and synths with a West Coast sound.
I first saw the trio in LA twice at the Lyric Theater, and was blown away by how tight the band sounded despite being relatively new. Paul, Les and Jake have a natural showmanship quality — you could tell they were hungry for their music to be heard.
Fast forward half a year later, I caught LANY at a sold-out show at The Studio at Webster Hall. Fans had been waiting since midday to be front row for the band, who have yet to release a debut album. Piercing screams, phones and sing-a-longs to their EP material (“ILYSB,” “4EVER!,” and “Where The Hell Are My Friends”) were the most poignant highlights of the gig. LANY sounded tighter than ever, and big things seem to be coming for the trio.
