Kipper : Jeff Karstens Is Non Tendered. I'll Miss Is That Lovable Face

As expected, the Pirates have non-tendered right-handed starter Jeff Karstens. The move, driven by financial consideration, will result in Karstens becoming a free agent.

General manager Neil Huntington said, `` A tough decision for us as an organization. We’re grateful for what Jeff has done, on and off the field.
“Our hope is that the door is still ajar and he would entertain an opportunity to return to the Pirates. We’d still like to have him back.”
Attempts to negotiate a contract with Karstens failed, as did attempts to trade him.
Karstens was entering his second year of arbitration. After making $3.1 million last season, he was due a raise that would have put him close to $4 million. The Pirates did not want to commit to that kind of money based on Karstens history of injury.
The case could be made that over the 2011-12 seasons, Karstens was the team's best starter. But with close to $20 million dedicated to starters A.J. Burnett, Wandy Rodriguez and James McDonald, the Pirates apparently did not want to sink any more money in their rotation. Blah Blah Blah

I think jeff Karstens' injury has the Pirates concerned and weren't willing to offer him around $4 million. He missed all of September, May and a good chunk of June. Karstens when healthy is a 3 something ERA guy with good control and command. He's the type you want on the back end of your rotation but I think the Pirates overly concerned with inuruies. After Erik Bedard, Charlie morton and Jeff Karstens went down to injury last year, Erik Bedard never was the same, Karstens never got healthy, they seem to be looking towards someone that can get the same/similar results as Jeff Karstens for around the same money/slightly more. This concept is what basically rubs the **** in Bob Smizik's usual whining about money theory.
The Pirates are supposedly interested in Chris Capuano who posted a 3.72 ERA in 2012 and a 1.22 WHIP along with 162 K's. The problem with Chris Capuano is that he';s not always that good. In 8 seasons he's had an ERA under 4, just 3 times and last time was the first time his WHIP was below 1.30. So there's certainly a lot of caution but Capuano will cost $5 million or per year probably so the Pittsburgh Pirates aren't looking to cut salary with the non tender of Jeff Karstens, they appear to be looking for a healthier body that can produce similarly.
I'm not entirely sure that is Chris Capuano but the Pittsburgh Pirates appear to be looking to make some more moves
