Have you been following the e. coli outbreak in Germany? I have, because two of my family members are traveling to Germany-- one is there now, and one is going to Berlin next week. They have both promised me they will eat lots of salad while they are there, but I trust this is just to annoy me.
Today at the farmers' market I asked Gérard, one of the sellers, if people had been avoiding cucumbers. "No, not really," he said, "but I carry only French cucumbers. I did have one man ask specifically for Spanish cucumbers, though!"
"Ça m'étonne!" I said. [That surprises me!]
"Yes, he said it was for his mother-in-law."
