Kazoomies Brunch in Fremantle

By Foodie Cravings @foodiecravings

Invited to dine at Kazoomies I wasn’t sure what to expect as I’d never heard of this place before. A quick Google search clarified the style of cuisine – North African/Spanish so I recruited my sister to join me for breakfast/brunch on Saturday morning. She isn’t normally a fan of standard breakfast fare so I figured what Kazoomies dishes up would be right up her alley.

Located on the waterside of E-shed markets, overlooking the B-Shed ferry terminal, the outdoor style dining makes the most of the views and weather. It was lovely to sit out and see people boarding the ferry for Rottnest and there was quite a lot of activity in the area for 9:30am. The area is shaded so the warm weather was enjoyable as a slight breezed washed over us. The décor is all upcycled and rustic which suits the market area and the overall feel of Fremantle.

Perusing the diverse and extensive menu, we were spoilt for choice and everything sounded incredible. There was a handy Kazoomie-Pedia at the back which clarifies any menu choices you may be unsure about.

We decided to order the Kale Me! juice and English Breakfast tea to start with. All the breakfast choices (available 8am – 3pm) looked delicious and we had a hard time deciding – although eventually settled on the Zaldeesh’s Lamb Red Shakshuka and the Pastilla Pumpkin. We figured it would be a great contrast of flavours as one of the dishes is vegetarian.

The drinks came out quickly and the Kale Me! ($8) is served in an attractive tall glass with ice. It contains fresh apple, cucumber and kale, with a hint of mint. It was so refreshing and was the perfect level of sweetness. I’m not a massive fan of kale but the taste was hidden amongst the other flavours.

Neither of us can start our morning without a cup of English breakfast tea so we ordered a pot each ($4/pot). I’m always cautious when ordering tea as I can be quite particular about the flavor but Kazoomies was spot on. Filtered water and a nice flavor of leaves made for the perfect drop.

The venue is lovely and was busy for a Saturday morning. Speaking to owner/chef Nimrod Kazoom, he told us that the majority of his clientele is made up of locals and people who he has catered for. Clearly they’ve all discovered this hidden gem and have been keeping it to themselves. Chatting about the location, my sister and I remarked that this kind of place is a winning concept and would be perfect along Beaufort Street. It would be one of those ‘places to be’ because of the relaxed atmosphere and the innovative food they serve. Granted, it’s only a short stroll away from the bustling Cappuccino strip in Fremantle but until now, I didn’t know what I was missing out on. Whilst sipping on tea and enjoying the weekend paper, our meals arrived and what a sight to be seen.

To keep energy costs down Chef Nimrod explained that they use chopping boards and the pans used to create the meal to serve their food. Two brightly coloured dishes were presented to us and I promise you, they really did taste as good as they looked.

Zaldeeh’s Lamb Red Shakshuka ($23.50) Poached eggs in a slow cooked tomato sauce with cinnamon’d kadaif lamb

I’m embarrassed to admit that I’d never had shakshuka before but wow what a taste sensation. There’s a reason why this was named by Gourmet Traveller as one of the top 26 Breakfasts in Australia. Two perfectly cooked poached eggs, their golden lava center combined with the spiced lamb meatballs encased around a cinnamon quill were unbelievable. The lamb was moist and juicy and matched well with the richly flavoured sauce. Buttery pita bread on the side was a welcome addition to soak up the sauce as we munched away.

It seems that foodie cravings is also a huge shakshuka fan. Check out her Italian mother-in-laws shakshuka recipe.

Pastilla Pumpkin ($21) Vegetarian dish poached eggs, lentil salad, spicy pumpkin patella, wilted spinach, pickled beetroot and sherry hollandaise.

We both loved this dish and my sister and I said we’d definitely order it again. Even though it is devoid of meat, it was so satisfying and every mouthful was a flavor sensation with various textures in every bite. The filo pasty was light and flaky with soft cubes of lightly spiced pumpkin with dukkah hidden inside. The same perfectly poached eggs nestled to the either side of the parcel made for a very attractive dish.

Although the dessert cabinet looked oh so very appealing, we were both too full to order anything else after eating two substantial sized meals. We agreed though that it wasn’t a feeling of discomfort as there weren’t a lot of carbohydrates in the dishes.

Leaving the restaurant, I’m already planning my next visit. As well as breakfast, Kazoomies also offer a lunch/dinner menu, which is tapas style dining, ideal for sharing. I’ve spied chicken parmigiana on there and seeing as that’s my husband’s favourite, that’s already pick number one.

You definitely won’t be disappointed if you dine at Kazoomies.
