Kappa Puttu is a dish from Kerala, India. It is made with maravalli kizhangu(tapioca) and coconut.Kappa Puttu can be eaten as a dessert or as a breakfast item. You can serve it with jaggery or honey or palm jaggery and grated coconut.

Serve this puttu as hot with vellam or panai vellam or you can serve the curries you usually serve for other puttu recipes.

Milk extraction: soak the grated kizhangu in salt for at least 5 to 10 mins that will help to squeeze the milk.

Ingredients to make kappa puttu recipe:

Main ingredients: Use a good variety of maravalli kizhangu. Don’t use dried ones.

Filler: As always we use for puttu recipes, coconut is the filler for this puttu recipe also.

How to make kappa puttu:

  1. Wash and cut maravalli kizhangu into pieces and halve them.
  2. Remove the outer skin and center the thick strand.
  3. Grate it using a grater, mix with little salt and keep aside for 10 minutes.
  4. After 10 minutes, you can easily squeeze the milk.
  5. Squeeze as much as possible and keep aside.
  6. Heat a pressure cooker with water or puttu pot.
  7. In a puttu maker, fill 1 tbsp of coconut and half portion of squeezed kizhangu and then fill with coconut about 1 tbsp fill the remaining portion with kizhangu and final seal with coconut.
  8. Close the lid and place it on the whistle knob.
  9. Cook for 5 minutes, and you can smell the aroma of cooked kizhangu.
  10. Now take the puttu maker and serve it hot with jaggery or palm jaggery or banana.
