Jumble Hole Clough: A King Finding A Croissant Amusing

Colin Robinson is in an ambient, pastoral mood on A King Finding A Croissant Amusing, the new album of his one-man project Jumble Hole Clough. Digging into his grab bag of sounds he choose bits and pieces marked "far east musings", as if he capturing Hokusai's wood prints in music. Of course there's plenty of Radiophonic workshop weirdness as well, but the overall mood is contemplative, with a slight buzz as counterpoint - the electronic equivalent of the tiny bubbles trying to escape from a thermos in Holy Loch and Faslane. The title track is destined to be the main theme for a stop-motion movie that will haunt the kids at night.

Robinson is an avid word-smith, and although he doesn't sing on this album the song titles itself tell the story, like the unfortunate character who is doomed to take a nasty spin in Falling Down The Stairs At Piccadilly Station. Or how about the baffling concept pictured in The Physical Movements Of The Characters Across Their Territory Spell Out The Letters Of A Secret Alphabet? Food for thought for both MI6 and amateur conspiracy theorists. Robinson's avant-garde is instantly recognizable, but never repetitive. A King Finding A Croissant Amusing is quintessentially English: baffling, amusing, and adamant to get the listener on the wrong foot: eighteen short pieces as a litmus test to find out if he is paying attention.
