I am not much of a fan in general of happy music. Even the pop music I like needs some sort of edge, a blue edge to it. I need energy, emotions and necessity. I need a bit of punk, but also melody and it needs to be dark, in lower keys. I need a bit of chaos, no OCD nor perfection in music please. I also need it to be somewhat unpredictable. I am describing music, but this goes totally for photography as well.
It is one of the reasons I love The Minds of 99, a mixture of all of the above plus undefinable magic (always needed to be truly amazing!). The new Danish band Joyce probably landed on my radar recently because they have the same management company as Minds. I remember hearing their track Djævlen some months ago and just wanted to shout, punch the air but also dance and I instantly wanted to play it again. Very addictive. I love the energy of this track, and it has that energy without loosing sight of melody.
A week ago I had the change to experience and photography Joyce live, at Loppen in Copenhagen for Gonzales Photo Agency – the agency I am proud to be part of. As the situation is now, with just about everything in Denmark closed down because of COVID-19, this is probably my last concert for a while. It was fortunately a great concert, Joyce came out with a mad level of energy and kept it at 100% for a 40 minute show. Energy, emotions, necessity and a bit of punk anarchy too. They only have 2 songs released so far but clearly already had a dedicated crowd, and I assume the rest of the songs they played are from their upcoming debut album which I definitely look forward to.
A short note on the black and white pictures here. I am very soon doing a blog post about black and white versus colour, but as with most things I do it is just a feeling, instict. The edgy grainy punk of both the music and the venue here just lends themselves really well to some mega trashed high contrast grainy black and white conversions.
Keep an eye out for Joyce, they will be headlining some of the Danish festivals in coming years I am sure.
