Australian youngsters are at it again! Combining the production talents of Gab Strum, aka Japanese Wallpaper, with the smooth vocal stylings of Jesse Davidson, the dreamy perfection of “Between Friends” was born. At age 17, Strum just won this year’s competition for acts still in high school, run by the massive Aussie radio station, Triple J, amongst finalists that included Davidson and Lupa J (formerly Lupa). It’s Strum’s expertise in songwriting abilities that sets him above the rest and gives a sense of vitality to his ambient electronic pop. “Between Friends” is the perfect example of his knack for progressive layering and polished blending of tinkling synths that swirl into a mesmerizing yet articulate haze. Davidson’s soft vocals gently skim in echoes across the ethereal underpinnings of Strum’s synths, making for a wondrous sound that calls for more than one repetition. If you’d like to get lost inside more Japanese Wallpaper compositions, you’ll find plenty on his Soundcloud.
