Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) Convener Wasantha Mudalige was yesterday further remanded till January 17, by Colombo Additional Magistrate Tharanga Mahawatta.
The Magistrate ordered the Terrorist Investigation Division to expedite the investigations pertaining to the incident. The Magistrate inquired the TID if it was fair to conduct investigations against this suspect under the Prevention of Terrorism Act following the protests held in several areas.
Senior Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris appearing on behalf of the TID informed the Magistrate that the Aragalaya is a good thing and it was accepted by the society as well.”However, the violence unleashed by damaging the government and public property is absolutely unacceptable. The Aragalaya and the Violence should not be mixed up together”, SDSG Peiries added.
He further stated that sufficient evidence has already been revealed to prove that violence has been tried to be attributed to the activities of the Aragalaya by Wasantha Mudalige. “President of the Lanka Private Bus Owner’s Association Gemunu Wijeratne mentioned in his statement that Wasantha Mudalige asked for buses to transport people to the places where protests are taking place and that they will pay for it with the money received from various organizations in foreign countries,” SDSG Dileepa Peiries added.
President’s Counsel Saliya Pieris representing the suspect stated that the prosecution was not able to submit facts that the suspect has committed offences under the Prevention of the Terrorism Act.
He further highlighted that several members in the Aragalaya have recieved higher job positions in the Presidential Secretariat. He further pointed out that the government is trying to remand the people whom they don’t like.
