FINISHED SINCE THE LAST UPDATE:

The Last Days of Magic by Mark Tompkins
The Madwoman Upstairs by Catherine Lowell
Flawed by Cecelia Ahern

Mark Tompkins’ novel was pitched to me as along the same vein as Deborah Harkness’ series; while I would not go so far as to compare the two – because Ms. Harkness’ story is vastly superior to this one in my opinion –  I do see the similarities and why publicists would raise that comparison. Still, I think it is a wonderful hybrid between history and fantasy with its battle between real historical figures and the mythical creatures.

Catherine Lowell’s novel about a Bronte family mystery was wonderful. It had the mystique and atmosphere of Old School, Oxford. It had pages upon pages of discussions regarding all of the books ever written by the Bronte sisters. It had literary discourse and theory. I loved it.

Cecelia Ahern’s entry into the young adult world is not quite as “flawless” as I would have hoped (seriously, sometimes I crack myself up). Repetitive, formulaic, and overly simplistic, I struggled with wanting to ditch it and wanting to find out what happens – not that I could not guess. I finished it but doubt I will continue with the rest of the series.
