" data-orig-size="265,400" sizes="(max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px" aperture="aperture" />Nora Roberts has upped her game with her latest novel and the first in a trilogy. Gone is the familiar story sequence fans all know and love. There is no pairing up of couples, very little sex, and no clear quest for our little group to achieve (at the end of book three). There is magic, which she does so well, but this first book is oh-so dark. And bloody as well as deadly. I can see this one going one of two ways for fans – they are either going to love it or hate it. I personally loved it. It is not a feel-good, fun adventure story with some fantasy thrown into the mix. This is a down-and-dirty dystopian/fantasy novel where the end is not a foregone conclusion. Not that you can decipher what is coming because she throws more twists at you than I have ever seen her write. I loved this new dimension to her writing. I love that she was willing to change things up and I love that she took a chance on something so dark and mysterious. I, for one, am going to be waiting anxiously for the next book in the series.
I read the first novel in the Jackaby series as a galley and loved it. I had always meant to continue the series, but time and other review copies got in the way. With some free reading I could finally get around to catching up on this delightful series. With the final book out, it is the perfect time to do so. Fun, funny, entertaining, and easy to read, these are the perfect books when my attention span and time is limited.
