I did read this week. Unfortunately, reading so much of one novel before I decided to put it aside for good put a damper on what I finished. I seem to be in a spate of long novels again after a run of shorter YA. This never bothers me because I do like a long, well-developed novel, but it does get me when I can’t finish at least two books in a week. Better luck next week!

I didn’t know what to expect with this fictional telling of Lizzie Borden and the murders of which she was accused. Then again, I was not very familiar with her story other than knowing the rhyme about whacking her father and mother. I was impressed with the way Ms. Schmidt tried to pull everything together, recognizing that she was working with an unsolved mystery and that there would always be dissatisfaction at the lack of closure.

I gave this historical fiction novel from Susan Holloway Scott 200 pages of my time. It was at that point where the repetitiveness of certain phrases, the plodding pacing, and the general simplicity of the language left me wanting something else. For the right reader, I am sure that this is a delightful look at A. Ham’s better half. For me, I wanted something less childish and more hard-hitting. In fact, it reminded me a bit too much of the Sunfire historical romance series I devoured as a preteen. Plus, the novel is really not about Eliza so much as it is about seeing A. Ham through Eliza’s heart-covered eyes. In flipping to the end, I see that Ms. Scott ends the novel after A. Ham’s death, failing to record all of the things she did after that. I would like to learn more about the best of wives the best of women, but I am going to find my information from someone who will focus on Eliza and not her famous husband.

I am slowly making progress on this one even though I want to savor it and soak up RBG’s amazing fortitude, convictions, and drive. I hope to finish it this week.
