It’s a Saturday Night on Calaguas

By Dtwobrokegirls @dtwobrokegirls

Much has been said about the “backpacker’s paradise” Calaguas. True is a beach worth visiting because of its powdery sand and clear water. Even better, is the boat ride to the Island from the port of Paracale was a treat. The sight of islands of rolling hill, rock formations and lush greens greeted us. The weather was fine so there were no waves during the boat trip.

???????????????????????????????

I haven’t seen a lot of beaches but compared to some of the few that I’ve seen Calaguas is beautiful. When we arrived at the island I imagined Boracay; back in the days when there were hotels, bars and other establishments built in the island. Though, there were some structures like cottages and stalls in the island.

???????????????????????????????

It was a weekend so there were many of visitors, some do-it-yourself campers and others part of arranged tour groups. There were plenty of people but the beach is not crowded unlike the resort you usually visit.

???????????????????????????????

That night at camp some of my friends decided to sleep outside of the tent; I decided to sleep in the tent for the fear being bitten by mosquitoes. Turned out the mosquitoes will be less of my worries. Unfortunately, some men from the other group were having a drinking session. I can hear their discussions as if I was seating with them as a guest. The plans of heading to Sagada, to Mang Manny whoever he is; I should have volunteered to transcribe their conversation. After which we heard aerial fireworks and loud music coming from the other side of the island. We’ve decided to check it out.

???????????????????????????????

It was Boracay like on a regular night. We were all shocked at what we saw. A mobile bar that offers drinks to would be clients was placed and it was playing music that could wake up the dead. Also present were some low tables with people drinking and chatting. Then we saw some fire dancers whom were now posing with the ‘happy campers” for a photo op.

An alcoholic beverage seminar for a group and a souvenir shop souvenir shop a few meters away. There were also a group with sky lanterns on the far end of the island. I felt bad this was happening in the island. If campers would want to party they should gone to other beaches; since Calaguas is visited because of its tranquility.

By dawn, everything became still once more.  The sound of the waves was the only thing you could hear; alas, the Mabahang Bugangin came back the quiet beachfront we step foot on yesterday. It is now Sunday..

* The locals we talked to said that it only happens on a weekends but who knows this parties may be a permanent attraction on a once unspoiled paradise. Hopefully the local government can do something about these activities.
